There are more than 50 lakh vehicles plying on Bangalore’s roads today. At any point during the day, there is always a traffic jam in some part of the city. And given this situation, it isn’t hard to figure out that at any given point in time, at least two vehicles are getting into a road accident. But, at Greenwood High International School we know that all hope isn’t lost. It only takes a moment to realize that if we followed some simple traffic rules, the situation could certainly get better.
So, if you drive to office every day, what is the first thing you do after getting into your car? Fire up the engine? Turn on the radio? Well, whatever it is you do, it certainly isn’t as important as wearing your seat belt. A seat belt automatically increases your chances of survival in an unfortunate road mishap by at least 50%. Sure, your car might come with state-of-the-art safety features including air bags, ABS, and a sensor on every side, but, in most cases, these aren’t as helpful as the seat belt.
The World Health Organisation (WHO) states that only 27% of drivers across the world use a seat belt. Why? Well, the most common excuse is that it is uncomfortable and inconvenient. If a little discomfort could save your life, what would you choose? And the best part is most of us who travel by cars are educated enough to understand the perils of not wearing a seat belt. Sure enough, there are laws to ensure people wear seat belts but come to think of it, do we need a law to enforce something that can save our lives. So, the next time you travel in a car, it doesn’t matter if you’re sitting in the front or at the back. Wear a seat belt. Do the right thing.
